About the Building
A saloon, chophouse, and general store all occupied this site before a fire occurred in 1912. After the devastating fire, this building was constructed out of brick by the widow of W.H. Walton, a prominent local businessman and politician. The building cost was $27,000, quite a large sum in those times.
In 1915, Berzel's Bakery and Confectionery took advantage of the prime location, east of the city, and occupied the main floor above Charles Defoe's three-lane bowling alley.
From the 1920s to 1950s, physicians' offices and a medical clinic took up residence on the second floor to enhance the core of activity in Downtown Dickinson.
In 1951, Doctors Weir and Weir opened a dental practice upstairs. It was in this era that Service Drug, later known as Service and Gift Store, became a virtual landmark in Dickinson.
